AI search optimization for contractors

AI search optimization for contractors.

When a homeowner asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overview who to call, the answer is a short list of names. We work to put your business on that list, and we track whether the mention turns into calls.

  • Get named in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews for your trade and towns
  • Fix the profile, listings and reviews that AI tools read first
  • Add pages that answer what homeowners actually ask
  • A monthly AI visibility report next to your calls and forms

Example project · HVAC Example · not a specific client

From missing to named in AI answers.

An illustrative HVAC company with a decent Google profile but thin service pages and mismatched listings. We rebuilt the profile categories and services, cleaned up 40-plus directory listings and added answer sections for repair and tune-up questions. Within a few months, AI tools started naming it for its main towns.

How AI picks names

AI tools don't rank pages. They repeat sources.

Ask an AI assistant for “an emergency locksmith near me” and it doesn't search the web the way you do. It pulls from a handful of sources it trusts and repeats what they agree on. Three things decide whether your name is in that answer.

01

Your Google profile is the first source.

For local questions, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews lean on Business Profile data: categories, services, service areas, hours, photos and reviews. ChatGPT and Copilot draw on Bing Places and the big directories. A half-filled profile is easy to skip, so this is where we start.

What we do: pick the right primary and secondary categories, list every service you actually sell, set real service areas, and keep photos and posts fresh, so the profile answers the question before anyone opens your website.

02

Agreement beats volume.

When your name, phone, services and towns match across Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp, the BBB and trade directories, AI tools treat those facts as safe to repeat. When listings disagree, with an old address or a second phone number, the safer move for the AI is to leave you out.

What we do: pull every listing we can find for your business, fix them to one name, address and phone, and close the duplicates. Boring work, and the one most agencies skip.

03

Answers get quoted. Brochures don't.

Pages that answer one question clearly, like how long a spring replacement takes or what a lockout call costs, are the passages AI tools lift and cite. “Quality service since 1998” never gets quoted. Reviews work the same way: “fixed our gate opener in Katy the same day” beats “great job.”

What we do: add short answer sections to your service pages, write a few focused guides for the questions that come before a call, and set up review requests that ask for the job and the town.

What's included

Everything AI tools read, fixed and kept current.

Six pieces of work, done in this order. Most of it also helps your Google and Maps rankings, so nothing here is wasted if AI search changes again next year. For the details on each platform, see ChatGPT SEO and Google AI Overviews (which also covers Gemini and AI Mode). The same work helps with Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot too, since they also cite the web sources they find.

⌕

AI visibility audit

Where you stand today, in plain numbers. We ask AI tools the questions your customers ask, town by town, and record who gets named.

  • Real homeowner prompts tested for each town
  • ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews checked
  • Which competitors get named instead of you
▤

Profile and Places cleanup

The sources AI tools trust most for local questions. Wrong categories or missing services are the most common reason a good contractor gets skipped.

  • Google Business Profile categories and services
  • Bing Places and Apple Business Connect
  • Photos, hours and service areas kept current
⌖

Citation consistency

One version of your business, everywhere. We fix the big directories first, then the trade and city ones that AI tools cite for your area.

  • Name, address and phone matched on every listing
  • Yelp, BBB, Angi, Nextdoor and trade directories
  • Duplicates and old addresses removed

Answer pages

Short, direct sections on the pages you already have, each one answering a question homeowners type or say out loud.

  • One clear question per section
  • Costs, timing, warning signs and what to do now
  • Written for your trade, approved by you
★

Reviews that say something

Reviews are quoted more than any page you write. A steady stream of specific reviews also lifts your Maps ranking.

  • Requests sent right after a finished job
  • Prompts that mention the service and the town
  • A reply to every review, good or bad
{ }

Schema and crawler access

The technical layer that makes your facts easy for machines to read, and makes sure AI crawlers aren't blocked by accident.

  • LocalBusiness and Service schema
  • FAQ markup where it fits
  • AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt
What usually goes wrong

Why most contractors don't get named.

We see the same four problems in almost every first audit. None of them are hard to fix. They just need someone to own them.

The problem

Half your listings show an old address or a second phone number from a tracking line you stopped using years ago.

Our fix

We find every listing, correct it to one version and remove the duplicates, starting with the sources AI tools read most.

The problem

Your website talks about quality and family values, but never answers a single question a homeowner types.

Our fix

We add short answer sections on costs, timing, warning signs and when to call, written in your words and approved by you.

The problem

Your reviews say “great job” and “very professional” and nothing about the work or the town.

Our fix

Review requests ask customers to mention the job and where they live. That's the detail AI tools quote back.

The problem

Nobody checks what ChatGPT or Google's AI says about your business, so mistakes stay there for months.

Our fix

We test the same prompts every month and show you which tools name you, what they say, and how that lines up with your calls.

How we measure success

Four numbers. Every month.

AI mentions are a means, not the goal. On top of the AI visibility report, these four numbers tell you whether the work is paying for itself.

☎

Calls

Tracked numbers on your site, profile and ads, with source, duration and recordings, so you can see which calls became jobs.

✉

Forms

Every quote request and booking form, tagged by the page and the search that brought it in.

⌖

Map rank per area

A grid of ranking points across your service area, so you see the towns where you win and the ones still missing.

$

Cost per lead

What you spend divided by real leads, by channel. The number that tells you where the next dollar goes.

What is AI search optimization?

It's the work that makes AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews mention your business when someone asks for a contractor. You may also hear it called GEO or AEO. For a local contractor it mostly comes down to a complete Google profile, consistent listings, reviews with real detail, and pages that answer real questions.

How is this different from SEO?

It overlaps a lot. Most of what gets you named in AI answers also helps you rank on Google and Maps. The difference is what we check and report: on top of rankings, we test real prompts in AI tools every month and show where you're named and where a competitor is.

Can you guarantee we'll show up in ChatGPT?

No, and be careful with anyone who does. AI answers change with the wording, the location and the day. What we can do is strengthen the sources AI tools rely on, then show you prompt by prompt how often you're named.

How long does it take?

Profile and listing fixes can start showing up within weeks. Answer pages and reviews build over a few months. You get a baseline in the first audit and a progress report every month after.

Do AI answers actually bring calls?

Some bring calls directly, through the call buttons in AI Overviews and Maps. Many homeowners see your name in an AI answer, then search for you on Google before they call. We track both: visits referred by AI tools and searches for your business name, next to calls and forms.

Do I need a new website?

Usually not. Most of the work happens on your profile, your listings and your reviews, plus answer sections added to the site you already have. If the site is the problem, we'll tell you after the audit.

How much does it cost?

It depends on your trade, how many towns you serve and how much cleanup the audit finds. You get a written number after the free check. The first 3 months are a commitment, then it's month to month.
